DualCor cPC losses mobile phone connectivity and degrades to UMPC Origami without wireless May 12, 2006 [mobile PCs (Tablet PC, mini-PC, ...)] | By Edward J. R. If you would like to get ultra mobile PC with mobile phone built-in then don't hold your breath and don't wait for cPC from DualCor! By end of May 2006 (this month!) several UMPC computers will be on sale (including very stylish Samsung Q1) so probably DualCor company decided to cut on features to shorten delivery date and is releasing cPC without (promised) mobile phone functionality built-in - just as an UMPC device with typical "touch pack" from Microsoft (application for Windows XP - similar to "Media Center" in MCE - that facilitates usage of the device with touch screen rather than with digitizer for which Tablet PC platform was originally designed):
According to information from the website of DualCor, including specifications (PDF file), now cPC will be shipped without build-in wireless, i.e. not only without mobile phone but also without Wi-Fi and Bluetooth! Of course cPC has CF (compact flash) and USB attachment possibilities. Example: some media center computers (powered by Windows XP Media Center Edition) have Wi-Fi included in the package however not as built-in option but as USB Wi-Fi stick! Probably DualCor wants to deliver cellular functionality just as CF card, not as built-in feature. Whether USB stick or CF card - having wireless as external add-on completely disqualifies cPC and the fact that it runs boht Windows XP Tablet PC Edition and Windows Mobile for Pocket PC in one device and on 2 processors - becomes irrelevant. It looks after all that UMPC may damage cPC... particularly because cPC is behind the schedule (first quarter 2006 release date was missed) and because cPC has now super strong competition in form of several UMPC manufactured by well known brands or by original equipment manufacturers themselves (thus cutting off the middle-men like DualCor). The cPC was a brilliant idea, because it included Windows Mobile phone built-in into ultra mobile PC, but now without "phone" feature, it will become just another missed opportunity, if not a vaporware.
