Review of HTC Breeze (Qtek 8600) - the first ever MS Smartphone for 3G/UMTS
May 28, 2006 [MS Smartphone] | By Edward J. R.
It looks like the first in the world detailed review of HTC Breeze smartphone, that will be sold as Qtek 8600 and under many different other names too, is now online!
Some highlights from this review about HTC Breeze:
- while HTC Universal - by now the only Windows Mobile phone with support for UMTS/3G - is big and not pocketable, the HTC Breeze is small and very much pocketable! In fact HTC Breeze is only slightly larger than HTC Tornado (known also as Orange SPV C500).
- cellular systems: GSM (900/1800/1900 MHz, but no 850 MHz popular nowadays in USA), GPRS, EDGE and UMTS
- 2 cameras are built-in: 1.3 megapixel camera on the back of the phone (for taking photos mainly) + CIF (352x388 pixels) in the front (for video calling)
- memory card slot: microSD (known previously as "TransFlash") - it becomes increasingly popular in all mobile phones, not just smartphones! The microSD card slot in HTC Breeze is accessible externally, so there is no need to take off the battery, to exchange memory card.
- processor: Samsung 2442 of speed 300 MHz! In other words: faster than most current MS Smartphone devices that feature usually processors up to 200 MHz. Using Skype for MS Smartphone - including voice calling - may become possibility at last also in MS Smartphone platform!!!
- Bluetooth 2.0
- memory: 64 MB of RAM and 128 MB of ROM
- no built-in Wi-Fi
- industry standard mini-USB connector (and not non-standard flat mini-USB as in HTC Star Trek smartphone)
- infrared port
- jog-dial for navigation - it looks like a wheel, but it is not a wheel, but just a up-down button
- the unit of HTC Breeze, that was tested still didn't have support for stereo audio over Bluetooth, but it is expected that in final model this support will be provided
- similarly like it is in HTC Universal, when HTC Breeze is in the coverage area of UMTS network (3G standard for Europe and Japan mainly), then symbol "U" appears in title bar and phone can make video calls and connect at higher transfer speeds

Conclusion: for all people who don't need touch screen and QWERTY keyboard, this smartphone - HTC Breeze - will be perfect choice!
