Windows Mobile friendly SlingBox ALREADY SOLD OUT in UK!
June 01, 2006 [General] | By Edward J. R.

Next week World Cup 2006 starts and this time England team is strong and has chances to meet Brasil in final, so World Cup fever in UK is huge and will be even bigger! Unfortunately SlingMedia has not delivered enough units of SlingBox to satisfy huge "World Cup fever" -style demand and it looks like SlingBox will not be able to deliver enough units to retail shops in UK (PC World, Currys and Dixons) on time (i.e. before World Cup starts on June 9th, 2006)....

There are many factors why SlingBox may be huge success in UK and in Europe:
  • people who are traveling or working long office hours would not like to miss some TV programmes (not just World Cup 2006 events but also Big Brother and other regular TV shows)
  • availability of cheap airlines, that enable ultra-cheap traveling from one side of European continent to another for a price very often lower than a price of taxi service from one city district to another
  • free (no visas and no permits needed) movement of people within European Union, for example many thousands Brits move to Spain and France - for business and leisure, and would like to watch their local British TV
  • restrictions of pay-per-view TV to given country what results in situation where selling some pay-per-view packages is forbidden in other countries than home country (example: Sky TV from UK that can't be sold outside of UK legally)
Nonetheless the World Cup 2006 - the biggest sport event in the world, that takes place only once in 4 years, is a huge impulse for people to buy TV related equipment nowadays so if SlingMedia will not deliver enough units NOW to satisfy customers and their huge demand resulting from World Cup fever, the sales later on may be much lower. The window of opportunity for SlingBox in UK is NOW and hopefully SlingMedia will not share destiny of Sony Ericsson that once was not able to meed demand for their phones because certain component manufacturers were forced by contracts (and by volumes) to ship these components to Nokia and then Nokia managed to deliver but Sony Ericsson missed window of opportunity.

Since SlingPlayer Mobile is available also for Windows Mobile, good news for SlingBox is good news for Windows Mobile so clearly it is vital that SlingMedia will ship more SlingBox units to UK as soon as possible!!!
