June 12, 2006 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R.
GIGA-BYTE Communications is a division of GIGA-BYTE company from Taiwan of motherboard production fame, and now, after gSmart, gSmart-i, comes another 3rd Pocket PC phone: also small, also with Wi-Fi, but this time with built-in GPS receiver! Here is information about gSmart i300 from the latest (2006) GIGA-BYTE catalog:

... and here are other highlights about GIGA-BYTE Communications company and their other 2 Windows Mobile phones:

Here once again highlights of gSmart i300 Pocket PC phone, this time in textual form:
- GPS: SiRF Star II single chip solution
- Bluetooth 2.0
- Wi-Fi / WLAN 802.11g
- 2 megapixel camera with auto-focus and macro function
- cellular: GSM tri-band, GPRS
- mini-SD card slot
Conclusion: GIGA-BYTE has replaced TV tuner with GPS receiver and in this way created new small and very interesting Pocket PC phone. Obviously for most people built-in GPS receiver is much more needed than Tv tuner, so gSmart i300 has big chances for success - if only GIGA-BYTE will find good distribution channels. GIGA-BYTE is also working on a Windows Mobile phone with QWERTY keyboard for single handed usage and Treo-like looks - we have seen prototype of it but were not allowed to take photos.
