Wistron - another manufacturer of Windows CE powered phones?
June 13, 2006 [General] | By Edward J. R.

It looks like Taiwanese hardware manufacurer Wistron will be making phones powered by phone platform based on Windows CE and proprietary layer called "Soleus", that is competing with Windows Mobile itself (also based on Windows CE). While some people may praise such solution as a welcomed extension of operating system platforms, the reality is that by now all mobile phones powered by Windows CE only (without Windows Mobile and with proprietary layer instead) were failure and since these phones are not Windows Mobile compatible, much less customers are interested in them.

Wistron Licenses Soleus by Intrinsyc

Leading ODM selects Soleus to develop cost-effective, customer-specific mobile phones

Intrinsyc Software International, Inc., a mobility software and services company, and Wistron Corporation, one of the world's leading original device manufacturers (ODM) producing information and communications technology (ICT) products, today announce that Wistron has licensed Soleus as a software platform for the development of mid-tier mobile phones. Soleus is a turnkey software solution based on Microsoft Windows CE that offers a new way to develop mobile phones. Wistron, the first Soleus licensee, selected Soleus for its modular design and use of the Microsoft Visual Studio tool chain that provides a new and more economic model for quickly developing and deploying multiple phone handsets, with varying features and user interface designs, from a common platform. This approach enables Wistron to reduce development costs, build mobile handsets faster and incur less risk. The Soleus licensing agreement follows the February 13, 2006 announcement that Wistron and Intrinsyc were collaborating to integrate Soleus into custom handset solutions.

Wistron plans to develop a number of market-driven, feature-rich phones based on Soleus for mobile phone manufacturers and network operators under an ODM business model. As a leading ODM producer of ICT products, Wistron supplies its technology to top-tier, global mobile phone brands. When Soleus-based phones developed by Wistron are sold into the market, Intrinsyc will earn licensing revenue on a fee per handset basis. The integrated Soleus UI Framework enables Wistron to completely customize a phone's user interface providing the differentiation network operators and name-brand manufacturers demand. Further customisation is possible at the application level through the rich suite of available third party applications.

"Soleus can be used as a standard platform for developing a number of mid-tier mobile phones," said Eric Y H Huang, General Manager, Handheld Product Business Unit, Wistron. "The design flexibility and low cost benefits that Soleus offers allow us to rapidly develop the tailor-made mobile phones that our customers require. Wistron looks forward to working with Intrinsyc to deliver innovative and differentiated Soleus-based phones to our customers in several global markets."

"This first licensing deal for the Windows-CE based Soleus helps prove that handset manufacturers see the benefits of this development platform," said Neil Strother, research director for mobile devices for The NPD Group, an independent trade industry analyst. "Manufacturers such as Wistron want a high-level OS that can be used across multiple handsets. With Soleus, manufacturers now have a viable platform alternative to Symbian OS and Linux."

"Intrinsyc welcomes Wistron as a Soleus licensee. We are dedicated to Wistron's success, as one of the world's leading ODMs that has a global customer base and renowned reputation for the excellence of its technology," said Derek Spratt, CEO, Intrinsyc. "We are excited to be working with Wistron to bring several Soleus-based phones to market worldwide and are fully committed to co-developing the best feature-rich mobile phones for their customers."
