NetFront from Access + Sony provide alternative remote TV watching solution
June 21, 2006 [Pocket PC] | By Edward J. R.

It looks like SlingBox + SlingPlayer for Windows Mobile, will not be the only solution for Windows Mobile to watch TV remotely without the need to switch on the PC! Japanese mobile software company Access announced, in cooperation with Sony, a software (that has no final name yet) that will enable remote TV viewing in combination with Sony's LocationFree video streaming hardware! We had a hint that it will happen previously but we didn't know that it will not be Sony itself but 3rd company that will provide this feature.

Access company at first was making NetFront Internet browser for Pocket PC, Symbian and as embedded solution for various mobile phones. Then Access purchased Palm OS and renamed it to Access Linux Platform (ALP). Now it looks like Access continues to support Windows Mobile although NetFront for MS Smartphone has never been released and MS Smartphone is being blatantly ignored by Access.

ACCESS Develops Image Viewing Software For Pocket PC Supporting Sony's "LocationFree" Technology - Strengthening Multi-Media Strategy in Embedded Market -

ACCESS CO., LTD., a global provider of mobile content delivery and Internet access technologies, today announced that it has developed image viewing software for Pocket PC, NetFront LocationFree Player Pocket PC*. The software supports the "LocationFree"software licensed from Sony Corporation (Head office Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo; President, Representative Corporate Executive Officer, Ryoji Chubachi) to ACCESS in April this year. The new software targets information-based home electronics and supports Windows Mobile from Microsoft. Product shipments are scheduled to begin in the second half of this year.

Using information-based home electronics that incorporate the NetFront LocationFree Player software,"LocationFree" users will be able to operate and view TV and other video equipment such as DVD players on the Internet or from a wireless LAN any time and any place, as if in their own homes.

NetFront LocationFree Player uses a MPEG4 decoder from Techno Mathematical Co., Ltd. (head office Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo; president and CEO Masafumi Tanaka) featuring a unique algorithm.

"As the communications infrastructure, the merger of communications and media, and the evolution of digital consumer electronics continue to advance, ACCESS is focusing more and more on technologies that will seamlessly connect the services and devices that are beginning to debut now and into the future," said Toru Arakawa, ACCESS' president and CEO. "By providing this image viewing software, ACCESS, together with companies like Sony, will advance the LocationFree lifestyle globally through PDA's and other devices. In the future, we intend to develop all kinds of products that will allow users to enjoy a LocationFree lifestyle with all information-based home electronics, including mobile phones."

* NetFront LocationFree Player Pocket PC is not a final product name.
