Motorola Q problems begin and number of returns extraordinarily big !
June 26, 2006 [MS Smartphone] | By Edward J. R.

Dreams of Motorola, that sales of Motorola Q will match one time sales of the ultra-popular Motorola RAZR phones may never ever materialize after all! Clearly launching CDMA version first - instead of GSM/UMTS version was a mistake:

Thumbwheel Does Not Work Like Blackberry:
The Motorola Q is a Windows device based on the Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone Edition. It is not designed to function like a Blackberry. This is a function of the operating system.

[...]

The Touch Screen Does Not Work:
This Motorola Q, unlike all Windows based and Palm based devices currently in our lineup, does not use a stylus or have touch screen functionality. This is by design to provide one-hand functionality.

[...]

The Motorola Q Does Not Have a Headset Jack:
The Motorola Q and most currently produced Motorola handsets DO NOT use a standard 2.5mm headset. It uses a headset that uses a mini USB connector. This headset is carried in most locations and is available through D-Fill. Verizon Wireless also sells an adaptor that converts the mini-USB connection to a standard 2.5mm jack so the customer can use an existing headset.

Conclusion: it is not fair to present Motorola Q as a replacement of Palm Treo if Q has no touch screen. Palm Treo also offers 100% single handed usage (in Palm OS version) but offers additionally touch screen that is a "must have" feature for some people. On top of that Motorola gives impression that Motorola Q can handle Office documents (Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint) but reality is such that it can only view such documents and for editing Pocket PC OS, and not MS Smartphone version of Windows Mobile is necessary. The bottom line is that mobile phone market for CDMA phones is many many times smaller than GSM/UMTS/HSDPA market, what results in CDMA phones being less developed and having less features. Clearly it was mistake on part of Motorola to release CDMA EVDO version of Motorola Q first instead of concentrating on much bigger outlet market: GSM phones. Only prompt release of GSM version of Motorola Q (with built-in Wi-FI and UMTS support) can save the situation...
