.NET Compact Framework for Symbian phones - coming soon ? June 28, 2006 [General] | By Edward J. R. It may be just another vaporware, that is being announced but never released... but if this would be real, then it would mean, that major competitive advantage of Windows Mobile phones - availability of .NET Compact Framework virtual machine that can run .NET software - would cease to exist! With .NET software development of wireless applications is much faster and easier and one can use Microsoft tools like Visual Studio. Please note that other tools like AppForge CrossFire actually don't provide real .NET Compact Framework running in the phone but just a virtual machine with their own APIs... Unlike Java however, Microsoft has only made the .NET Compact Framework available on MS Windows Mobile— based devices. Enter Red Five Labs By providing an implementation of the .NET Compact Framework for S60 devices, Red Five allows applications targeting the .NET Compact Framework to run unchanged on S60 devices. Uniting the dominant smartphone OS platform and Microsoft .NET creates value for all stakeholders. [...] Red Five Labs is about to launch a first public beta of its .NET Compact Framework runtime with class libraries for Symbian OS powered mobile devices. The beta will be compatible with Microsoft's 1.0 Compact Framework for Smartphones, and will run on S60 (previously Series 60) emulators and devices. To learn more click here.
