MDC 2003 Europe: Neil Enns tells stories about new MS Smartphone platform
April 01, 2003 [MS Smartphone] | By anonymous 1.

(on picture above: Neil Enns presenting smartphone hardware especially for msmobiles.com!)

Some key points from presentations (official MDC sessions) of Neil Enns:

- old MS Smarphone based on Windows CE 3.0, new MS Smartphone based on Windows CE .NET 4.2

- .NET Compact Framework comes to MS Smartphone, what makes developing apps for smartphone thousands time easier than by now

- Configuration Manager now accessible also for all developers, not only for cellular network operators; you can configure remotely everything, registry included

- WAP Push Router interception - good not only for MMS clients but also for gaming

- Home screen plug-in-s can be debugged now - what makes their development easier

- a lot of extensions to the Shell

- extensions to Internet Explorer (CSS, etc)

- several fixes and extensions in messaging (like SMS interception, where intercepted SMS messages does not appear in the inbox at all)

- IPv6

- WAP over SMS support completed

- Bluetooth stack and API now included in platform

- Menu Extensibility provided for Contacts and other standard Smartphone apps; add your own menu positions easily !

- remote file viewer not needed in emulator for file copying to it - because one can map hard drive into emulatorīs file system

- Virtual Radio in emulator - now test SMS receiving/sending , placing calls, etc., in emulator !

Commentary: Microsoft really listens to the community of users and fans and progress is really visible. The sophistication of MS Smartphone next generation (exact name not known, but working name "MS Smartphone 2003" is used by some people not from MS; "Ozone" name restricted to the new Pocket PCs though, not Smartphones) exceeds Symbian/Series 60 and if only hardware vendors would like to play along, the MS Smartphone (2003) may become really a killer!
