Early review of T-Mobile MDA Vario II (HTC Hermes) points out weak UMTS/3G signal reception !
July 02, 2006 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R.

Clearly T-Mobile MDA Vario II (HTC Hermes) is not on sale yet, but already some journalists received it for testing!

The most popular in Germany magazine about mobile phones - Connect - in issue July 2006 is reviewing T-Mobile MDA Vario II which is a HTC Hermes Pocket PC phone branded by T-Mobile Europe (it will be on sale, starting July or August 2006, in Germany, UK, Netherlands and other European countries where T-Mobile is operating). Here are some highlights from this review:
  • this phone not only supports UMTS (3G technology) but also HSDPA (fast version of UMTS for faster data access)
  • T-Mobile will be selling this phone in claret-red color, what may be not optimal for many users, who are used to silver or black phones
  • the QWERTY keyboard, that is retractable from under the display is not using whole area fully, so it is smaller than it could be (please note: this keyboard is NOT usable with single hand like in Palm Treo or Motorola Q - user needs to use both hands)
  • scroll wheel is apparently very good, so are soft buttons as well as a button with which user can stop programs running in background
  • by delivering HSDPA/UMTS in combination with Wi-Fi/Bluetooth this phone delivers everything anybody could ever need in wireless area
  • 2 cameras : one for video calls in front of the display (of lower resolution) and one on the back (2 megapixel, with macro/landscape function)
  • this phone has serious problems with connecting to UMTS networks, particularly in areas where signal strength is low - sometimes it takes very long time to get connected to UMTS

Conclusion: for some people QWERTY keyboard that can't be used with single hand is a deal-stopper, but for many others this small Pocket PC phone will be ideal and future-proof purchase! Main new feature of this phone is support for 3G - both UMTS and HSDPA - but since 3G coverage still is weak in many areas (even on the route between London city centre and Stansted airport there are problems), these problems with reception may be detrimental. The only hope is that HTC will release some software upgrades that will improve this dodgy 3G reception, but if the problem lies in hardware, it could be unresolvable.
