Audio interview with Seth Fogie - Vice President of Airscanner Corp.
July 08, 2006 [Wireless (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ...)] | By Edward J. R.
Nowadays many Windows Mobile phones and PDAs have built-in Wi-Fi or can have it added through external SD or mini-SD card. If you have a Pocket PC phone with Wi-Fi in combination with Wi-Fi sniffer from Airscanner company you can fetch any information you desire from all users of Wi-Fi networks. Clearly Symbian phones can't do it!
Since Airscanner Corp recently released Wi-Fi sniffer program for Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC edition, we were interviewing Seth Fogie:
... to find out what this program - Airscanner Mobile Sniffer - can do!
Here are some highlights from this interview:
- it is worth buying Windows Mobile phones rather than Symbian or Palm OS phones, because with this cheap (90 USD) program one can turn a Windows Mobile phone into a full-blown Wi-Fi network scanner
- open, not protected by WPA, Wi-Fi networks, including most hot spots, can be sniffed with this program and a Windows Mobile device - so that passwords, content of emails, content of Instant Messaging - all can be detected and saved
- due to high portability and pocketability using this Wi-Fi sniffer is very mobile meaning that sniffing can be done also without drawing attention of the crowds
- many users keep their Wi-Fi access points open either because they are not geeky enough to configure wireless security or because they (naively) want to give access to anybody in the area - with this Wi-Fi sniffer and a Pocket PC all these networks can be overheard
- due to small amount of MS Smartphone devices sold (and only small part of them supporting Wi-Fi) this Wi-Fi scanner is available only for Pocket PC, but not for MS Smartphone. Moreover Airscanner Corp is not even working on a version for MS Smartphone so if you need Wi-Fi network sniffing possibilities in your mobile phone, you must purchase Pocket PC phone!
- there are two versions available, an unsigned version that runs on
Windows Mobile 2003SE and a signed version that runs on the Windows
Mobile 5 platform. The program costs around 90-120 USD (depending on the
support period) but 30 day free trial version is available
- data transmissions fetched from the air from Wi-Fi networks can be downloaded and transferred to the PC for analysis purposes: very often texts are spread over several IP packets and then analysis on Pocket PC could be cumbersome. This sniffer supports also data format of Ethereal network analyzer so various tools (programs) can be used for network data analysis.
