The first real review of Samsung SGH-i320 available !
July 14, 2006 [MS Smartphone] | By Edward J. R.

Samsung SGH-i320 is only slightly bigger than HTC Typhoon MS Smartphone:

... but it is much thinner (HTC Typhoon is 2 times thicker!), is of very solid construction and features very usable QWERTY keyboard for single handed usage! Samsung SGH-i320 that starts shipping by the end of this month in Europe, can be to MS Smartphone popularity in Europe, what Motorola Q was in USA!

This excellent review of Samsung SGH-i320 is in French and it can be viewed here (it includes video review of this phone and many photos and screen shots - so it is worth seeing anyway).

Here are some highlights from this review:
  • it looks like France will be one of the first countries where Samsung i320 will be shipping - Samsung has even prepared special microsite about this phone (in French) as you can see here. There is no such microsite in English yet!
  • the keyboard is in "AZERTY" layout that is a typical French keyboard layout
  • push email is included (MSFP) and the phone is powered by Windows Mobile Smartphone edition operating in horizontal resolution 320x240 (very pleasant to use, also for movie playback - The Matrix movie playing in this phone is presented in the video part of this review)
  • cellular systems supported: GSM (900/1800/1900 MHz), GPRS, EDGE ; no UMTS and no American GSM band GSM850 ; since most operators in Europe already introduced EDGE, lack of UMTS may not be a big problem
  • all connectors are covered by special plastic protectors
  • USB and headset connectors are non-standard (not mini-USB) - require Samsung compatible cables
  • infrared port is available
  • micro SD card slot is not accessible externally (but it could be not such a big problem as the phone can be configured as logical memory drive and can be used without ActiveSync thus)
  • according to TCPMP (audio/video playing software) the processor speed of Samsung SGH-i320 is 420Mhz; the processor name, as provided in the "About" screen is "ARM920T PXA27x"
  • the unit tested is a production model (final) - even a box in which this phone is sold is presented in photographs!
  • in the package apart from stereo headset and USB cable also "battery holder" is provided, with which users can charge battery without usage of the phone it self - very practical while traveling, so that spare batteries can be charged without the need to switch the phone off!
  • stereo audio over Bluetooth profile is supported
  • some old programs for MS Smartphone are working with limitations (not using up whole screen for example) or are not working at all! However minor changes and simple recompilation should resolve this temporary problem.
  • the phone is equipped with high-quality stereo loudspeakers that use SRS WOW TXT technology
  • the official price of this phone is 499 Euro = 310 British pounds = 570 U.S. dollars, but some online shops are promising to sell this phone for 400 Euro only.
