Review : TextSpeech Pro - professional Text-To-Speech (TTS) software for Pocket PC released
July 18, 2006 [Pocket PC] | By Edward J. R.

Unlike some dictionaries with text-to-speech feature, this program is especially designed to provide text-to-speech of longer texts for Pocket PC phones and PDAs! It has been released only very recently and we present here a review of this TTS program!

While the program is converting the text to speech, the cursor is moving and highlighting the word that is being spoken at given moment:

... and user can close eyes and listen to the text without the need to switch notebook on - just with his/her Pocket PC device! Read on!

First of all it is important to have memory card because this program takes 18 megabytes:

... but also if free internal memory size is smaller than 40 megabytes the program can have problems with installation (we failed to install this program in a Pocket PC phone with 9 megabytes of internal memory free but installation went smoothly in other Pocket PC phone, that had 40 megabytes of free internal memory).

After installation the "TextSpeech Pro" icon appears in the programs folder:

... and the program can be launched from there.

Please note that we are reviewing version 1.0.0 of this program:

The program has its own "file open" dialog:

... where various files with text can be opened and converted to speech.

There is only one voice available (included with the program) called "NeoSpeech Paul" but user can change settings to make the text-to-speech process more compatible with one's hearing comprehension capabilities:

User can select only small part of text and then only this part will be converted to speech, but user can of course also order conversion of the whole text in the file.

Conclusion: TextSpeech Pro for Pocket PC is a brilliant software, that can be extremely usable, particularly if one is travelling and one has no audio files but just text files to read. Furthermore this program can facilitate learning - particularly because sometimes information input through more senses than one (reading only) can improve learning speed. This program can be also highly usable while driving - so that driver can listen to texts without the need to endanger the traffic on the road! In any case area of applications for this program is big but the bottom line is that this text-to-speech program generates very comprehensible text.
