Windows Mobile powered Palm Treo for Vodafone will not have built-in Wi-Fi
July 24, 2006 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R.

Palm Inc is located in USA, where all wireless carriers offer flat rate mobile Internet access, so Palm Inc clearly doesn't understand how vital it is to include built-in Wi-Fi in smartphones...

... because in most countries of European Union (EU), including UK (but excluding Germany and some countries in east EU), there is no flat rate mobile Internet access - most operators offer 1 to 5 GB monthly traffic and once this limit is exceeded huge money is demanded for each megabyte! The only way out of this madness is having built-in Wi-Fi so users can transfer wirelessly data and connect to Internet at hot-spots. In other words: offering Palm Treo without built-in Wi-Fi equals to failure (unless Vodafone will launch true flat rate, what is unlikely as long as Arun Sarin still is CEO of Vodafone).

Here is what boss of Palm Inc says about Wi-Fi:

Palm will add wireless Internet capability to future models of the Treo phone. The company had declined to add Wi-Fi because it drains battery life. Chief executive Edward T. Colligan would not say when the capability would be added. "We do believe Wi-Fi is an important technology," Colligan said. "There's no question that we'll ultimately put in our products, but at the right time."

Please note: for people who are disgruntled with this arrogant behavior of Palm, we recommend not to buy Palm Treo for UMTS/GSM (that will be without Wi-Fi) but instead wait a bit and get one of several phones, both Pocket PC phones and MS Smartphone devices, that are coming soon and that will also feature Qwerty keyboard for single handed usage - and will also have built-in Wi-Fi... and not only BenQ, Fujitsu-Siemens and several less known Taiwanese manufacturers (such as Gigabyte Communications and others) have such devices in development, but also the giant itself - HTC - is very close to the launch of such device (we can't say more due to NDA)!!!
