Audio interview with Cyril Houri - CEO and founder of Mexens Technology - makers of Navizon solution July 27, 2006 [General] | By Edward J. R. Navizon solution consists of software for Windows Mobile and a service with location data. With Navizon it is possible to find your location even if your Windows Mobile phone has no built-in GPS - just on the basis of cellular network data and/or on the basis of Wi-Fi access points. Navizon has many many other features including ability to push location data through virtual serial port, that is compatible with GPS software like TomTom, ALK CoPilot, etc. - so that you can use such navigation software also if you have no GPS at all! In this interview we are talking with Cyril Houri:
... not just about the Navizon software and service in details, but he also reveals plans of Navizon and major changes in Navizon's offering that will happen in August 2006: Since August 2006 Navizon software will no longer be free for GPS-less devices and only if given phone has built-in GPS and (!) this GPS is switched on - only then this Navizon software will be free. However Navizon will introduce a system of points and money rewarding, where people, who are reporting location data (cell IDs from cellular network or names of Wi-Fi access points AND geographical location) will be getting money transferred to their PayPal accounts. The cellular part of Navizon works for all HTC manufactured Windows Mobile phones, both Smartphones and Pocket PC phones, for Motorola Q:
... and for some other phones, however it is not working for Palm Treo 700w and HP iPAQ hw6915/hw6515 phones. Of course the Wi-Fi part of location works in all Windows Mobile phones and is very usable particularly in cities. Navizon is however working on bringing cellular based location also for Treo 700w and other phones. Users can submit location to Navizon servers:
... so that other Navizon users can see that their friends are in vicinity or can simply know their location (configurable, privacy protection possible). Users can also submit GeoTags meaning that users can comment on some locations (like restaurants, shops, etc):
... so that other users can see these GeoTags and thus be much better informed about the area in which they are staying. To listen to the interview in full click here.
