Review of Samsung SGH-i320 July 30, 2006 [MS Smartphone] | By Lutzh Haedrich. We are happy to show you another Windows Mobile Smartphone device that is not made by HTC - the Samsung SGH-i320! Check out the pictures, screenshots and videos that show you how beautiful and feature rich the SGH-i320 is! ![]() By Lutz Haedrich It looks like Samsung is taking over my household - in 2006 they are releasing more and more stuff, that fits to my personal taste as well as to my work and entertainment needs. Some examples? Sure! I've got me a Samsung Plasma TV, the Samsung Q1 UMPC and since last week I am the owner of the SGH-i320 Windows Mobile Samrtphone. So it is about time to show you this beautiful "Work Smart & Play Smart" device with alpha numeric keys, landscape display and a bunch of other features that other Windows Mobile Smartphones don't have. Enjoy the pictures, videos and screenshots and remember to ask your questions in the forum! ![]() The SGH-i320 in front of Samsung's Ultra Mobile PC, the Q1 ![]() Landscape 320 x 240 screen and alpha numeric keypad (AZERTY in this version, since I've bought it in France from PIXmania that offered outstanding service, fair shipping and handling rates and delivered the phone within the promised 24 hours!) ![]() ![]() ![]() Here comes some technical data for the SGH-i320: Networks: Tri-band GSM 900/1800/1900 MHz Screen: TFT 262,144 colours (box states only 65536 colours!) 320x240 pixels SMS/MMS/E-mail: SMS, intuitive SMS (T9), Chat SMS, MMS Client, Push Email Voice recognition: YES Wap/GPRS: WAP 2.0 xHTML browser GPRS Class 10 (4+2) EDGE Internal memory: 120 MB, MicroSD memory extension Connectivity: Bluetooth Stereo, Bluetooth printing, USB Port, Infra-red Java applications: YES Photo/Video Resolution: SXGA - 1280 x 1024 pixels Zoom: YES, Flash: YES Dimensions: 111 x 59 x 11.5 mm, Weight: 86 g Battery: Lithium Ion (1000 mAh), stand by/talktime: up to 200 hours/3.5 hours Included accessories: Travel charger, Stereo headset, extra battery On board languages: French, (UK) English, German, Italian Now let's start the virtual walk around the SGH-i320! ![]() Up & down keys for volume ![]() ![]() On top of the phone there is the infrared eye ![]() ![]() Camera key (the one with the red insert) and quick list/key lock key (the one with the phone symbol on) ![]() Plug for external power, sync cable and headset ![]() Charger/pc data jack and headset jack opened ![]() Charger at work. The triangle LED indicates charging (red) and fully loaded (green) ![]() Five way navigation key, talk/end buttons and left/right soft keys, home and return key ![]() The AZERTY alpha numeric keys. FN switches to the functions on top of the keys, 123 switches to the numeric input (the device does switching from ABC to 123 automatically if the input field contains the information to do so, but you can also manually switch e.g. for digits input in text messages). Not so good: You can not adjust the timeout for the keypad backlight by default. I have to check the registry for this, I am sure there is a workaround for longer lighted keys! ![]() Good visible even in the dark. ![]() ![]() The microphone hole at the bottom of the phone ![]() Turned around: See the two speakers for (quiet good) stereo sound, the camera lens with flash light support (see images of the camera at the end of the story) ![]() ![]() Open for battery, microSD card and SIM ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The SGH-i320 comes with two batteries that can be placed in this little plastic housing ![]() But not only you can transport the battery in there - it has a plug for the power chord so you can charge the second battery! ![]() Since size does matter - here are some shots that show the SGH-i320 side by side with the HTC MTeoR and the Qtek 8500 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The headset that comes with the phone. Thankfuly the SGH-i320 also works with wireless (bluetooth) stereo headsets. As you can see in this little clip you can even initiate calls from the bluetooth headset (i.TECH Clip S)! CLICK HERE FOR THE CLIP! ![]() Now it is about time to check out the "inside" of the phone. The landscape format of the screen is limiting the size for plugins on the today screen. Too bad that nobody works on a solution to place different plugins side by side like Orange did with the spv e200, this screen is one hell of an invitation to do that! But Samsung created a plugin that expands on key press and is configurable in terms of its contents, so you can have the kind of information on screen that you like. By the way I am no fan of Chelsea but since Samsung is sponsor of that club they've included two Chelsea background images ![]() See the power management in the left of the picture above? It gives the optionto increase/de-crease brightness of the homescreen. Never seen that on an Smartphone before! Great feature! On the images below you see the big storage capacity ![]() More cool features built in: The "D-Day"-counter that counts down the days to events that you have defined prior. World clock and the converter for things like currency, temperature or weight, the option to use the SGH-i320 as mass storage device or seperate WAP browser are extending the use of this device ![]() More cool stuff in the pictures below: The voice assist, a voice control/voice dial application that works brilliant in all four on board languages on launching applications or calling someone. Just great! The sound themes are setting jazzy/mystic sound schemes for start up/shut down as well as for the different sound categories and profiles of the phone (you can hear it in the video on the bottom of the review). Finally - remember the self made tweaks to disable the connect tone on older smartphones? Samsung heard you PLUS you can set a minute reminder for phone calls. Want to change the soft key on the homescreen? No tweak needed, simply use the built in application. And if you don't like the use of the side button since you don't use the camera or other features more often - just change it! And finally the SGH-i320 comes with the well known Samsung SRS WOW sound application to change the sound to more rock or jazzy feeling. Thats not much more than fun, but nice to have. As well as having the "Send via Bluetooth"-option in the file explorer ![]() Made by Samsung ![]() Here are some pictures I've made with the built in 1.3 megapixel camera. I think the quality is not too bad, even if I wish it would be at least 2 Megapixel ![]() "Negative" mode ![]() Black/white mode ![]() Sepia mode ![]() My wife last night around midnight. See the flash light works :-) ![]() The video camera records in 3GP format. I have shot some seconds and converted to wmv format. CLICK HERE FOR THE CLIP! If you would like to see the SGH-i320 in action, see the speed, how it lays in the hand, what it sounds like then CLICK HERE FOR THE CLIP! Since the phone has this bright and crispy clear landscape screen I was wondering what a movie will look like. CLICK HERE FOR THE CLIP! If you want to know more about this great phone, you can download the full manual (PDF) here: In English In German In Italian In French ![]() I hope you know more about the SGH-i320 now, I hope you had a good time reading this and watching the pictures and videos.
