For developers: Microsoft to release this month XNA but support for Windows Mobile dropped ? August 14, 2006 [General] | By Edward J. R. XNA Express edition will enable game development for Xbox 360 and Windows XP, but not for Windows Mobile as expected...
XNA is a multi-platform game development environment, with which users can create games for Xbox 360 and Windows XP. Previously Microsoft was claiming that XNA will support also game development for Windows Mobile but here in latest announcement, where Microsoft says that it will be offering XNA "for free" (not counting $99 yearly fee) - so that freeware games for Xbox could be created - the Windows Mobile is not mentioned at all! Will XNA support Windows Mobile or not? This is crucial question because otherwise developers need to purchase non-free Visual Studio 2005 to develop Windows Mobile applications... Satchell, general manager of the Game Developer Group at Microsoft, announced details of the new technology, which will be broadly available this holiday season. XNA Game Studio Express will be available for free to anyone with a Windows XP-based PC and will provide them with Microsoft’s next-generation platform for game development. By joining a “creators club” for an annual subscription fee of $99 (U.S.), users will be able to build, test and share their games on Xbox 360 and access a wealth of materials to help speed the game development progress. This represents the first significant opportunity for novice developers to make a console game without a significant investment in resources. To learn more about the release of XNA click here. The official home page of XNA is here. * * * * * It is unclear yet what technology will XNA use for game development: if it will be .NET (managed code) then protection of intellectual property will not be guaranteed because .NET code can be easily decompiled. It is also very disappointing that although Microsoft understands, that amateurs/hobbyist should have access to free development tool for Xbox 360 - to attract more people to this game console by availability of freeware games - Microsoft totally ignores and disrespects Windows Mobile, although the very same incentive could help in propagation of Windows Mobile.
