Second Windows Mobile Treo to be launched - with built-in GPS!
August 22, 2006 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R.

American wireless carrier Sprint, that is well known as the one that provides the best and cost effective data service in USA, and operates similarly like Verizon over CDMA EVDO network, will be launching soon Treo 700wx Pocket PC phone made by Palm. At first glance it looks just exactly like Treo 700w:

... but there is one major difference - in a leaked specifications one can notice "GPS" as one of "built-in key features"!!!

Specifications (selected):
  • built-in GPS - sounds too good to be truth!
  • still low resolution display of 240x240 pixels
  • supports CDMA EVDO - Sprint Mobile Broadband with Power Vision
  • SD I/O expansion slot - SDIO Wi-Fi card may be used therefore but due to the fact that most users use external memory cards it is practically not utilized as SD I/O, but for some business applications (barcode scanners, etc) having SD I/O (full size SD) is crucial
  • QWERTY keyboard - Treo famously has the best QWERTY keyboards for single handed usage on the market
  • 1.3 megapixel camera - now 2 megapixel has become a standard
  • Bluetooth 1.2
Conclusion: Treo 700wx misses out on Wi-Fi but since Sprint's mobile broadband service is very good and very cheap, this may not be a problem. However if the "built-in GPS" feature would be confirmed by Sprint itself (and not just by leaked specifications that after all could be doctored), then it would mean major step forward for Windows Mobile Treo smartphones!

Please note: the name "smartphone" has been first used by Palm OS based Kyocera PDA phones, that were sold in USA and then picked also by Palm for their Treo PDA phones. Microsoft has confused situation by using name "smartphone" just for devices that have no touch screen and for smaller, heavily handicapped (no Office Mobile, no MS Reader, etc) Windows Mobile platform - MS Smartphone or Windows Mobile for Smartphone. Generally however term "smartphone" and "PDA phone" denote the same thing but entrance of Palm to Windows Mobile phones world, has introduced some confusion among Windows Mobile users, for whom "smartphone" means "not Pocket PC" but Windows Mobile Treo indeed are powered by Windows Mobile for Pocket PC Phone Edition version of the platform.
