Microsoft launches its own software store - Windows Marketplace - also with software for Windows Mobile !
August 28, 2006 [General] | By Edward J. R.

By now, when we were visiting Microsoft's stand at various conferences and trade shows, then usually Microsoft was graciously giving a table or 2 for mobile software vendors like Handango and Motricity (Pocketgear)... but it may change because Microsoft has just launched its own software shop called "Windows Marketplace", that also sells Windows Mobile software!

Really? No, not really! In reality Microsoft just created front-end and in case of Windows Mobile software, Microsoft still sells it through established companies like Handango and CNET...

Sell your products through the digital locker. With the digital locker, Microsoft helps software makers market their innovations through a compelling new way to discover and experience the breadth and depth of Windows-compatible applications. If your product is available as a download, you can distribute it through the digital locker and give your potential customers, wherever they are, secure and direct access to your solutions. There are currently four partners you can work with:

Digital River
eSellerate
Handango
Kagi

Conclusion: while Windows Marketplace may increase visibility of some products and thus, to certain extent, increase sales, the reality is that it is just a catalog that redirects to other stores like Handango. In other words: hope of developers to get more money precentually from their software, will not be fulfilled.

On the other hand this whole Windows Marketplace website of Microsoft is just a cunning way of Microsoft to convince (or rather FORCE) developers to obtain Windows certifications for various software. It is just a thinly veiled attempt to force developers to certify their software at Microsoft, according to Microsoft's guidelines.

Anyway if you are Windows Mobile software developer, or creator of home screens or themes for Windows Mobile, feel free to list your creations at Windows Marketplace!

The Windows Mobile part of Microsoft's Windows Marketplace software store is here.
