First-hand report from IFA 2006 : Samsung SGH-i600 - the best MS Smartphone ever
September 04, 2006 [MS Smartphone] | By Edward J. R.

It has everything you would need in a tiny ultra-flat smartphone, including Blackberry-like wheel, QWERTY keyboard for single-handed usage, video calling, HSDPA, built-in WiFi, Bluetooth, podcast downloader (!!!), RSS reader, and more... and since Moto Q has no WiFi and HTC Excalibur has no 3G, this truly is the best MS Smartphone powered phone ever!

Firstly, let's take a look at highlights of Samsung SGH-i600 smartphone as they were presented on Samsung's stand at IFA 2006 (in square brackets are our comments):

    (320X240, 2.3 inch)
  • Push E-Mail [from Microsoft, employee of Samsung said 'no' when asked whether Blackberry will also be supported in this smartphone; please note: we reckon that if some mobile operator would demand it, the Blackberry software could be installed in this phone]
  • WiFi 802.11b/g, Bluetooth
  • ROM 128MB, RAM 64MB
  • MicroSD-Slot
Availability: 4th Quarter 2006 [but surely before Christmas according to employee of Samsung]

Let's take a look now at various photos and screen shots of Samsung SGH-i600!

This smartphone features genuine true scroll wheel with back button:

... that presents signifacant improvement in usability and matches similar construction from RIM BackBerry devices. The wheel can be rotated unendlessly and pressed to select given item.

This smartphone has camera for video calling in the front:

... and camera for regular photo taking on the back:

Please note above text "HSDPA" that underlines that this phone indeed supports also HSDPA and not just UMTS, EDGE, GPRS and GSM. Furthermore we have been told that this phone can be used as wireless modem through various connections.

Size-wise Samsung SGH-i600 is similar to T-Mobile MDA Compact:

... but is much thinner:

Let us underline it once again: it is designed for single-handed usage:

... both for text typing through QWERTY keyboard and for usage of menus, etc.

Here is another view on the back of this phone, where once again you can see the wheel, together with "Back" button:

Unfortunately there is nowhere information about the speed of the processor in MHz, but we could spot information that push e-mail is supported:

Since this phone is powered by MS Smartphone and not by Pocket PC phone edition version of Windows Mobile, it is possible to change langauge of the phone from the menu, without burning new ROM image into it. The following languages are available:

Since we were the first in the world (November 2004) to publish podcasts about Windows Mobile, we were amazed to discover that not only RSS reader but also Podcast downloading application are pre-installed in this phone:

Podcasting application looks quite well:

... and RSS reader looks fine too:

Since HSDPA is extension of UMTS and since this phone has built-in camera in the front, we could claim that this phone supports video calling. However we still preferred to check it in the menu:

.... where you can see that video calling is 100% supported.

The same is with Wi-Fi that is built-in:

Nice touch from Samsung is ability to switch the phone into mass storage mode, so that you can copy files to your phone even without having ActiveSync installed in your PC or Mac:

Samsung SGH-i600 has everything one could expect from the phone powered by Windows Mobile for Smartphone. It is dream come truth for many fans of MS Smartphone platform. Of course some people want to have touch screen necessarily, and then one of several nice Pocket PC phones can fullfill their demands. However Samsung SGH-i600 is also very small - and 100% usable with single hand, so indeed it may be the best Windows Mobile phone for many users.
