More about changes at i-mate
September 08, 2006 [General] | By Edward J. R.

Here is a picture of i-mate JAQ, that Inventec will be manufacturing for i-mate:

i-mate, that by now was distributing phones manufactured by HTC only, will be probably using Inventec to make more phones, one of them probably will have name "i-mate K-JAR"...

Some short technical details of upcoming i-mate phones in general:
  1. Between 5-10 new devices, expected to be released ASAP to over a year
  2. Many of them with keyboard
  3. Small screens (2.x inch)
  4. Texas Instruments / Freescale processors
  5. 240x320 / 320x240 LCD/TFT + 2nd display
  6. MiniSD/MicroSD
  7. ROM/RAM almost as before
  8. GPS, TV Out, Scroll-wheel - on some
  9. AKU3, ability to change languages
... but of course one should expect changes in specifications yet!

These devices are a "quick solution" for i-mate's current situation after HTC going their own path - their long term strategy is to offer devices with top specifications to customers.

i-mate will control the whole development process as Microsoft Gold Certified partner and will make their devices more i-mate "branded" (plugins, VoIP/SIP, modified GAL, etc), moving closer to needs of enterprise customers, price products very competitively, step up on service & support..

Unfortunately i-mate doesn't answer to HTC's new strategy by even a press release about their own future.

Clearly i-mate must reply to HTC's new aggressive strategy in Windows Mobile market. We expect i-mate to very soon come with a press release. As we mentioned earlier i-mate was forced to find new manufacturers for their future devices to keep their market position.

Some possible are Quanta, Inventec, Mitac, etc. We do believe, that in the near future i-mate will present devices with technical specifications that will not be in the top class, but probably work their way into the HTC dominated market.

Anyway: new rather difficult situation for i-mate will bring more choices for end users of Windows Mobile phones - so while it may be hard times for i-mate, it will be interesting times for users...
