No wheel, no HSDPA, no Wi-Fi, no 3G video calling : Palm Treo 750v launched finally
September 12, 2006 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R.
How come Palm Inc is not embarassed by releasing a smartphone with inferior hardware features and touting it as the biggest invention since sliced bread? Why nobody sees, that king is naked?
Palm Treo 750v, is 3rd Treo powered by Windows Mobile - after 700w and 700wx and the first Windows Mobile powered Treo that works with GSM (and UMTS) networks. Here are some highlights of this phone:
- the good:
- quad band GSM with both GPRS and EDGE support
- Palm enhancements in usability - on top of Windows Mobile
- BlackBerry Connect available for users of BlackBerry devices that would like to switch to Treo
- Bluetooth stereo headset support
- 300 MHz Samsung processor (much faster than 312 MHz Intel Xscale processor but still too slow for video calling and serious Skype usage)
- the bad:
- tri-band UMTS but now HSDPA support - only 384 kbps compared to 1.8 megabit/s in HSDPA and 1 megabit/s in CDMA EVDO
- 1.3 megapixel - now 2 megapixel is minimum
- no Wi-Fi
- no 3G video calling (that is integral part of UMTS standard)

Verdict: don't buy this phone! These days built-in Wi-Fi and HSDPA are a must in PDA phones (Treo may be called "smartphone", but it has touch screen so it is also a PDA phone) and lack of these features is not acceptable.
