Impressions from CTIA 2006 in Los Angeles, USA
September 16, 2006 [General] | By Edward J. R.

The CTIA 2006 Fall trade show was not particularly eventful, and although some exhibitors were using fancy cars and attractive girls to attract visitors:

... in reality most exhibitors didn't have much new to show!

Obviously from our point of view the most interesting item was newly announced Treo 750v smartphone:

... that was announced on September 12, 2006 - the same day when CTIA 2006 started (was it coincidence?) - but unfortunately our reporter had to ask specifically about this phone - it was not displayed and showed proudly by Palm because this phone is designed and destined for European market!

Nonetheless our reporter managed to take some interesting photos of this fantastic smartphone, which you can see here:

Interestingly this Treo also has no mini-USB connector:

... what is however very good because mini-USB if used for everything - charging and synchronizing - can become wobbly and is susceptible to damage.

Treo 750v may have no wheel (after all touch screen makes up for it - RIM BlackBerry devices, Motorola Q and Samsung i600 have no touch screen so they need the wheel) but it has a button for muting the phone:

Our reporter has missed the new Pocket PC phones from UTstarcom, but he managed to talk to Motorola's Jason Gordon, who promised us an interview for podcast and presented Motorola Q - now available in USA:

... and very heavily advertised too:

... but clearly predicted 12 million sold units will probably never happen.

Interestingly also FCC - the type approval American organization through which all gadgets must go through - was present at CTIA:

Apart from Windows Mobile topics the bit topic of CTIA 2006 Fall was launch of RIM BlackBerry Peal 8100:

... not just because this BlackBerry is small and thin:

... but because it is the first BlackBerry device, that is a mass market device - it not only has push email, but also features camera and MP3 player and is generally expected to be sold to all mobile phone users, not just businessmen and professionals - like former BlackBerry devices. It is worth noticing that above mentioned Treo 750v is not a mass market device so in fact BlackBerry is ahead of Palm in a sense. In fact all Treos, including Treo 750v, are high-end devices, designed rather for professionals and businessmen and not for everybody - because of high-end design and because of higher price.

Another hot topic at CTIA was mobile TV and also various types of mobile content, including PlayBoy Mobile:

Conclusion: CTIA 2006 Fall was rather dissapointing and now everybody in USA awaits eagerly CES 2007, that takes place in January next year. At CES 2007 already Zune devices will be presented, and we hope to see there also new HTC devices. For now everybody rejoices the fact that Treo 750v is launching by the end of this month in Europe, although people in USA are dissapointed that none of American GSM operators (Cingular and T-Mobile) will offer it in near future...
