O2 Germany launches Xda orbit Pocket PC phone and Xda cosmo MS Smartphone September 19, 2006 [General] | By Edward J. R. In past it was O2 UK that was pioneer in Windows Mobile phones with their original Xda Pocket PC phone, but these days it is O2 Germany that is launching Windows Mobile phones first. Both are part of O2 Europe (owned nowadays by Spanish Telefonica) that is a wholly different organization than O2 Asia, despite having the same name... Highlights of O2 Xda cosmo: MS Smartphone, QWERTY keyboard for single handed usage, micro SD card slot, built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 200 MHz processor from Texas Instruments, landscape display 320x240 pixels, known also as HTC Excalibur. Highlights of O2 Xda orbit: Pocket PC phone, built-in GPS, built-in Wi-Fi (!!!), Bluetooth, micro SD card slot, FM radio, slow processor 200 MHz from Texas Instruments (too slow for Skype), innovative input methods (track ball + wheel), known also as HTC Artemis. Original source of this story is here (in German). Commentary: differentiation of offering is vital for success of Windows Mobile phones (the number one secret of success of Nokia is targeting every segment of the market, no matter how small that segment is) and introduction of various form factors and feature sets by HTC is very welcome. The fact that HTC Artemis sold by O2 has built-in Wi-Fi although the same phone sold by T-Mobile as T-Mobile MDA Compact III has no Wi-Fi, is a very good news and it practically means that really small Pocket PC phone with built-in Wi-Fi and built-in GPS is available! Previously, all (!) Pocket PC phones with built-in GPS were big and in most cases were missing out on Wi-Fi...
