Microsoft betrays manufacturers of Windows Mobile phones September 24, 2006 [General] | By Edward J. R. From the point of view of Microsoft if one Microsoft product will damage sales of another product of Microsoft, then Microsoft couldn't care less, because both products are anyway Microsoft based, right? Recently Microsoft has announced launch of Zune media player with built-in Wi-Fi and new content download service (music and video) - Zune Marketplace. The player itself will be manufactured by Toshiba and sold by Microsoft under Microsoft's own brand. Manufacturers of Windows Mobile phones are now very disappointed with Microsoft, that instead of licensing Zune player to them - to make Zune players and to embed Zune capabilities in Windows Mobile phones, Microsoft not only launched Zune player, but will release soon also Zune phones, that will directly hurt sales of Windows Mobile phones and thus will damage existing business of these hardware manufacturers, that have invested so much money in development of Windows Mobile phones. Also access to Zune Marketplace - a new content download service from Microsoft - will not be possible from Windows Mobile phones. Conclusion: if Microsoft will continue such behavior that is damaging directly its partners, it may well be that HTC and several other Windows Mobile phone manufacturers will start to abandon Windows Mobile and produce Symbian and Mobile Linux powered phones instead. Clearly Microsoft needs to start fighting Apple more seriously, because iPod marketshare in media players exceeds 75% globally, and Zune may be good way to do it, if only it wouldn't hurt seriously business of Microsoft partners, that are manufacturing Windows Mobile phones. Things, that Microsoft needs to do to save the situation:
