Asustek convinced Vodafone UK to sell their 3G MS Smartphone October 02, 2006 [MS Smartphone] | By Edward J. R. The 3G smartphone powered by Windows Mobile smartphone edition and designed/manufactured by Asustek was sighted shortly in various places during 3GSM 2006 conference in February 2006:
... but to design a phone is much different from convincing some mobile operator to sell it.... and selling through retail channels without operators is too difficult for most manufacturers. In other words: although Asustek has been releasing some 2G Pocket PC phones - rather unimpressive - in meantime, we have not heard however too much about their 3G smartphone - it was not even present at trade shows after 3GSM 2006! Apparently after many years (we have seen Asustek smartphone already 3 years ago at CeBIT - but it appeared to be vaporware) of making efforts Asustek at last succeeded to get some, rather low volume, deal with an operator: Industry sources said that after over one year of strenuous efforts, Asustek has become a formal supplier of 3G Windows-based smartphone cellphones to Vodafone. The British telecom carrier will sell Asustek's V1210 model as its first medium-to-low-priced smartphone model. Industry insiders said that the cooperation with Vodafone would help Asustek develop future sales to Vodafone and other telecom companies in Europe, though the first-batch order might not be too big. Asustek has also ventured into O2's supply chain in Europe to ship three 3G smartphone models, though the volume is also not very big. To read more click here.
