Windows Mobile success story : News International Ltd from UK October 20, 2006 [General] | By Edward J. R. While Symbian phones are just toys for children and for private use, many companies are using Windows Mobile for professional, mission-critical, purposes! News International Ltd Streamlines Operations with Voice, Data, and E-mail on Single Device News International, the arm of News Corporation in the United Kingdom, looked to offer top executives and editors a mobile solution that combined voice, data, and e-mail on a single device. The media giant considered a BlackBerry solution from Research In Motion, but decided against it because of concerns about cost, administration expense, and flexibility. With an existing investment in Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, communication and collaboration server, News International opted for mobile devices, powered initially by Microsoft Windows Mobile 2003 and now upgraded to Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0. The solution provides users with direct push e-mail, giving them access to messages anytime, anywhere. News International is now rolling out the devices to other employees—including journalists—and continuing to cut communications costs Interesting quote from the case study: “There is a significant difference in cost between the Windows Mobile 5.0 solution and BlackBerry because of the additional infrastructure required for the BlackBerry environment.” Victor Flemons, IT Manager, News International To read whole case study (in a MS Word document) click here.
