3G video calling in Windows Mobile - how it is done ? October 21, 2006 [General] | By Edward J. R. Here comes an interesting article about something that we were nagging Microsoft employees at various trade shows and conferences for many years already: ... Namely: why Microsoft has not built-in yet an application for 3G video calling (part of UMTS standard similarly like SMS is part of GSM standard)? The answer to this question still remains unanswered but one is for sure: the fact that Microsoft has not included 3G video calling in the Windows Mobile is clearly hindering hardware manufacturers from releasing true 3G mobile phones, that would feature also video calling! No wonder that Treo 750v has no video calling despite having UMTS - the reason is simple: Microsoft doesn't include it in Windows Mobile! Huge HTC corporation may have enough muscle to develop video calling application itself but rather tiny Palm Inc can't do much beyond extending home screen with fancy toys. This article, previously available only in paper version, is now available online and shows what challenges manufacturers must face - just because Microsoft doesn't understand importance of video calling, just because Microsoft neglects needs of hardware manufacturers (that would like to have 3G video calling as integral part of Windows Mobile): As Windows Mobile gains popularity and becomes more widely deployed in Smartphones and PDAs, the smooth integration of 3G-324M in Windows Mobile is becoming more and more important. How can this be accomplished? [...] Everything needs to be properly integrated with Direct Show. If it isn't done correctly, end users will regret the day they purchased the phone every time there is an incoming video call while listening to their favorite MP3 songs. And that will be the least of your problems. Improper integration could lead to inferior media quality or a low frame rate-which may cause customers to run and buy a different handset from another vendor. To read this article click here. While this article talks about video telephony in UMTS - a part of the standard - it contains also some interesting insight about Windows Mobile and certainly is worth reading.
