Leaked at FCC : Vodafone 1210 smartphone to be launched by Vodafone as Vodafone VDA IV soon
October 22, 2006 [MS Smartphone] | By Edward J. R.

... but it has no video calling! Clearly the fact that Microsoft fails to include 3G video calling in Windows Mobile operating system, causes troubles and more and more manufacturers are not including 3G video calling in their phones with UMTS support, despite the fact that 3G video calling actually is a part of UMTS standard! This is major disappointment.

While at first glance this phone looks like yet another production of HTC:

... in reality, as FCC documentation proves it, it is manufactured by ASUSTeK COMPUTER Inc! Interestingly under the battery still the name "Vodafone 1210" is visible, as you can see in this photo:

... although in the user manual Vodafone uses the name "Vodafone VDA IV".

Here is another look at this phone from the back:

Specifications (from the user manual):
  • processor : Intel PXA270 312 MHz (rather outdated processor - Intel has sold their mobile processor unit already)
  • operating system : Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone edition
  • cellular network system : UMTS (3GPP Band I = not working in USA, just for Europe), Tri-Band GSM (900/1800/1900, no 850 for USA!)
  • memory : 128 MB Flash ROM, 64 MB SDRAM
  • display : 2.2-inch, 65k color, TFT LCD, 240x320 pixels
  • expansion slot : one slot for micro SD cards
  • Bluetooth : version 1.2
  • USB : version 1.1 (slow!), client and host (but USB host allowed only for UID devices like mouse and keyboard and self-powered storage devices like hard drives, flash disks)
  • audio : 3.5 mm stereo earphone jack (standard size)
  • dimensions : 109.5 mm x 46.9 mm x 18 mm
  • weight : 103.3 g (with battery)
  • battery : 1100 mAh , Lithium-Ion
  • Java : J2ME (CLDC 1.1 + MIDP2.0)

Conclusion: due to lack of support for 3G video calling and lack of Wi-Fi, this smartphone is nothing impressive, but total lack of camera (neither for video calling nor for photo taking) indicates that Vodafone may be offering this phone mainly to business/enterprise customers - after all in many companies mobile phones with camera are forbidden. Unfortunately again this phone lacks mass market appeal and will be a failure.
