4 to 6 millions use Push Email from MS - boss of Windows Mobile division gives interview to German press
October 23, 2006 [General] | By Edward J. R.

The highest manager in Windows Mobile and embedded of Microsoft - Pieter Knook:

(on image above: Pieter Knook talks to representatives of China Mobile - the People's Republic of China's largest mobile phone operator)

... has given interview to German "Euro am Sonntag" (in English: "Euro on Sunday"), where he talked about latest move of Microsoft into push email market and also about Windows Mobile phones! Since the text of the article is German, here are some highlights of this what Pieter Knook said in this interview - translated by ourselves:
  • just one year after entrance of Microsoft into push e-mail market, Microsoft sees itself at eye level with RIM - the market leader in push e-mail and maker of famous BlackBerry devices
  • globally there is 15 to 20 million users of push email of which 30 to 40 percent is using Microsoft's push email technology what amounts to 4.5 to 6 millions [not a bad result in just one year]
  • users of Microsoft push email are people who previously were not using Push e-mail or in other words: Microsoft is not (yet) taking away users/customers from RIM but is convincing other users to start using push email
  • number of mobile phones powered by Windows Mobile has doubled last year and is now equal to 6 million units and Microsoft wants to keep such growth - 100% a year - also in next years. This could mean: 100 million devices powered by Windows Mobile by 2010.
  • Pieter Knook expicitly criticizes Nokia saying:
    • Nokia leads alliance around the Symbian operating system for smartphones and uses exclusively Symbian for smartphones. However de-facto Nokia dominates Symbian market - if not for other reasons, then because of the fact that it has biggest share in Symbian Ltd [our comment: it is 49% - what usually in most companies with several shareholders is nothing less than full control]
    • Nokia is a hardware manufacturer with software offering - this is a combination that in practice very rarely works out. Would you, as manufacturer of end devices, share you device strategy with software company, whose main owner is your most important comeptitor in hardware and software business? --- it's difficult! So at the end of the day Nokia will have to decide: is Symbian truly an independent software provider or just a development division of Nokia?
  • Microsoft is very open when it comes to customizations of Windows Mobile platform - as Palm did it in their Windows Mobile powered Treo smartphones
  • what new functions will Windows Mobile offer in future? Microsoft wants to improve communications functions - Pieter Knook said
  • will Microsoft offer computer games for Windows Mobile? Already possible in smaller offers + Xbox Live for Windows Mobile will offer ability to see number of achieved points in games and making appointments with other games - to play games on Xbox

Commentary: while this interview is interesting because specific numbers - of Windows Mobile phones and of users of Microsoft push email (that is usable also on a limited number of Nokia phones, including Nokia E61) - are mentioned, however clearly the major problems of Windows Mobile that hinder growth of market share in smartphone market were not mentioned. These non-discussed issues include: lack of video calling application in Windows Mobile platform (what results in many companies releasing UMTS phones without video calling although it is part of UMTS standard as SMS is part of GSM standard - only few companies like HTC are powerful enough to put this application into Windows Mobile phones), lack of support for 320x320 resolution (what results in Treo smartphones with pathetic resolution of 240x240 that is no good for web browsing and Office Mobile usage), lack of synchronization between PC and Windows Mobile over Wi-Fi (it was present in former versions of Windows Mobile but some imbecile at Microsoft decided to remove it), lack of Zune for Windows Mobile and lack of interoperability of Windows Mobile both with Zune and with Zune marketplace, lack of Office Mobile in MS Smartphone version of Windows Mobile, etc. In other words: instead of sprucing up user interface of Windows Mobile with new fancy graphics, Microsoft has a lot of work to do in core functionality needed for market success of Windows Mobile but it looks like Microsoft plays too much with GUI knickknack and generally Microsoft rests on its laurels...
