E-TEN launches glofiish X500 Pocket PC phone - supposedly the thinnest Pocket PC phone in the world October 30, 2006 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R. Still no 3G support (no UMTS, no HSDPA) and still no QWERTY keyboard for single handed usage, but apart from that X500 delivers EDGE (i.e. fast GPRS) and 802.11g (i.e. fast Wi-FI) - on top of built-in GPS receiver and Bluetooth 2.0! If you don't need 3G and QWERTY keyboard then this Pocket PC phone may be an interesting proposition particularly because it is very thin and small but unlike HTC Artemis it is powered by fast 400 MHz processor from Samsung (HTC Artemis uses 200 MHz processor from TI - that is too slow for Skype voice calls). Information from E-TEN follows. * * * * * * Thinnest E-TEN Pocket PC Phone Coming Soon glofiish X500 Delivers GPS and Wi-Fi All-in-One E-TEN Information Systems has released details of the company's upcoming plans for the Pocket PC Phone market. Highlights of the announcement include an all new case design that is considerably thinner than current products; upgraded communications with support for faster protocols and standards; and the ability to combine both GPS and Wi-Fi capabilities in a single device. E-TEN has developed a reputation for creating high-performance, full-featured Pocket PC Phones that have proven popular in both consumer and business markets. Its two most recent releases, the G500+ with built-in GPS and the M600+ supporting Wi-Fi, currently set the standard for Pocket PC Phone specifications with their fast 400MHz Samsung processor and huge 256MB of flash storage. So where can the company go from there? E-TEN’s thinnest design yet For their next release E-TEN designers have developed a new case which is only 15.5mm thick. Combined with the company's innovative internal antenna design, the case promises to make the glofiish X500 one of the most portable, pocket-friendly devices available, and perhaps puts E-TEN in the running to claim the title, "World's thinnest Pocket PC Phone" with both WiFi & GPS built in. Improved ergonomics have also been a focus and the new design is optimized of Windows Mobile 5.0. The case features 2 quick application buttons that offer one-thumb navigation of Pocket PC applications, 2 dedicated phone function buttons, and several user-configurable softkeys that give each individual the ability to customize and configure their device to best suit their needs. Faster communications While previous E-TEN Pocket PC Phones featured GPRS allowing users to access the Internet, send and receive emails, and access other data services wirelessly, the glofiish X500 goes even further adding support for the faster EDGE protocol. E-TEN has also improved Wi-Fi capabilities, offering dual-standard IEEE 802.11b/g for increased bandwidth and improved security. All-in-one For many the ideal mobile device would combine phone and GPRS capabilities for voice and data on the move; Wi-Fi for high-speed Internet and LAN connectivity; and GPS satellite communications for easy navigation and travel. The glofiish X500 delivers all these functions as well as Bluetooth 2.0, multimedia video and audio capabilities, and a 2 mega-pixel camera and (thanks to a high-performance 400MHz processor) even allows users to access multiple features or applications simultaneously making it the ultimate all-in-one device for both businesses and consumers. The glofiish X500 is scheduled to launch in November 2006. To visit home page of X500 click here.
