Gmail for Windows Mobile November 04, 2006 [General] | By Edward J. R. For a longer time already it was possible to use Gmail (the best email service on planet Earth) on Windows Mobile phones by pointing the browser to http://m.google.com, but it was not as fast and usable as using a stand-alone client for Gmail. Now it is possible to run Gmail as a stand-alone client, as you can see here:
... and how it works? Well, Google has released Java application (so called "midlet") that implements Gmail client functionality. Some (not all) Windows Mobile phones have Java virtual machine pre-installed - sometimes called "Midlet manager" and sometime called "Java". This Java virtual machine constitutes virtual execution environment in which Java programs (midlets) are running - and it can also run Gmail! Unfortunately due to security (certificates):
... and compatibility (MIDP version) issues - not all Windows Mobile phones will be able to run Gmail! Currently we know 100% for sure that this Gmail midlet runs in: Audiovox SMT5600 smartphone, Cingular 2125 smartphone, Cingular 3125 smartphone, T-Mobile Dash smartphone, O2 XDA II Pocket PC phone, Qtek 8310 smarthone - we will be updating this list successively but we recommend every user of Windows Mobile phones to try it out himself/herself: just enter address "http://gmail.com/app" in your pocket Internet Explorer inside of your phone, and open the link called "download Gmail"! Unfortunately Gmail for Windows Mobile in native form is not yet available, and Gmail configurations for Windows Mobile based on POP3/SMTP protocols and working in Pocket Outlook (i.e. inbox) are simply missing the point of the whole big usability of Gmail and push-like functionality. So our advice is just: give it a try in your Windows Mobile phone! Please note: some Windows Mobile phones have no Java virtual machine at all.
