Smartphone wars: Sony Ericsson buys UIQ from Symbian, still angry at Nokia November 07, 2006 [General] | By Edward J. R. When we published news item that Sony Ericsson dumps Symbian and selects Windows Mobile platform - as April Fool's Day hoax on April 1st - then Sony Ericsson UK contacted us and requested removal of this joke and sent lawyers against us (lawyers of Sony Ericsson contacted us and wanted to sue us). This time it is not a hoax: Sony Ericsson decided to buy UIQ - division of Symbian. UIQ is in direct competition with Nokia's S60 Symbian platform and whole situation shows how untrustworthy, fragmented and unstable whole Symbian is! Sony Ericsson today announced it has reached agreement in principle for acquiring the Swedish software company UIQ Technology AB, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Symbian Ltd. UIQ Technology, which uses Symbian OS, licenses the UIQ user interface and application development platform to mobile phone vendors worldwide. To read more click here - original source of this story. Conclusion: Sony Ericsson licensing Symbian but using UIQ instead of S60 further is extending fragmentation of Symbian camp and clearly by licensing Symbian, Sony Ericsson is supporting directly its main competitor - Nokia, that owns approximately 50% of Symbian and de facto is controlling Symbian. If Sony Ericsson would like to stop supporting foolishly Nokia, it should port UIQ platform to other than Symbian core operating system, like for example Linux or Windows CE. Otherwise Sony Ericsson foolishly will continue supporting Nokia and will never ever be able to beat it. Credit: Carlos.
