Zune -powered mobile phone is coming - says CEO of Microsoft November 15, 2006 [General] | By Edward J. R. This week sales of Zune media player, that is supposed to be "Apple iPod killer" started. Unfortunately Zune with current firmware is extremely crippled: has very limited user-to-user sharing capabilities (all your MP3 files belong to Microsoft) and lacks podcasting support (no direct Internet to device podcast downloading despite having built-in Wi-Fi). At least Zune shows album art properly (images embedded in MP3 files) - a feature that Windows Mobile division still is not able to achieve in Windows Media player for Windows Mobile - after 6 years of development. Next year Apple is launching iPhone (aka "iPod phone") so Microsoft is preemptively saying that it will offer Zune mobile phones too. Of course it will be after Apple will release iPhone... because Microsoft is a follower, not innovator. Microsoft Corp. plans to add a video-sharing feature to its Zune player and will eventually sell a model that combines the device with a phone, Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer said. Apple will probably introduce a new video iPod with a larger screen than the current 2.5-inch model as early as January and enter the mobile-phone market with an iPod phone in 2007, said UBS AG's Benjamin Reitzes in New York.
