Rumor: HTC Cavalier smartphone coming November 18, 2006 [MS Smartphone] | By Edward J. R. HTC Excalibur has no 3G support - neither UMTS nor HSDPA so... it is not competitive enough to combat Samsung i600 series (including BlackJack) and Motorola Q phones - other phones powered by Windows Mobile Smartphone Edition and equipped with QWERTY keyboard for single handed usage. This information first surfaced at various Russian websites (see link below) and it is not confirmed (it may be untruth) but it is worth pointing out, so that potential customers will be informed about possibilities: successor to HTC Excalibur is coming and its code name is "HTC Cavalier"! Here are specifications:
Commentary: while HTC managed to release to market HSDPA Pocket PC phones on time - the HTC Hermes - it looks like HTC has some technological problems with 3G phones powered by MS Smartphone (the touch-screen-less version of Windows Mobile). It may be that users expect MS Smartphone devices to be smaller and the real problems of HTC are in miniaturizaiton of 3G technology! There are rumors for example, that HTC MteoR (to be branded as Orange SPV C700) has failed tests and will not be released at all: he SPV C700 will not be released onto the Orange range range as, after several months of testing, it did not meet our technical requirements. The main issue was battery life, which considered insufficient to give a satisfactory user experience Apart from that this smartphone has been released without video calling feature! Clearly HTC has problems with miniaturization of HSDPA (and generally UMTS) phones and time is running out: Nokia is releasing early next year first smartphones with HSDPA, and by the end of first quarter 2007 the first Samsung smartphone powered by Symbian S60 and equipped with HSDPA is coming too!
