E-Ten event took place today in London, UK
November 20, 2006 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R.

E-Ten, company that has very long traditions of making Pocket PC phones (albeit in past mostly known only in Asia), actually as long as HTC itself, organized today an event in London when some British journalists were present to see and touch latest devices.

First the first time E-Ten has mentioned 3G phones during our interview with president of E-Ten but today E-Ten was also talking about their upcoming 3G phones (UMTS at least, possibly HSDPA?):

chat to Teresa Chou, Marketing Director for Eten, who had flown into London from Taiwan for the event.

The question on everyone's lips was... when can we expect to see 3G devices from Eten? Teresa revealed that a number of new products are to be launched in early 2007 with 3G capability, which is included without having to give up the almost 'signature' GPS capability in the device.

Even better though... E-Ten / Glofiish are to release a VGA Pocket PC phone, also in early 2007! Packing a 2.8" VGA display - previously unseen on Windows Mobile devices, the new offering will include VGA, GPS etc. in a highly desirable form factor in fitting with the current crop of E-Ten products.

Commentary: to achieve mass scale success comparable to HTC, E-Ten would have to make some deals with mobile operators, involving operator branding - selling devices under their own brand may not suffice. While phones with slide-out keyboard and built-in GPS are good idea, one should not forget that nowadays phones with single-handed QWERTY keyboard are becoming extremely popular - due to popularity of BlackBerry and mobile messaging and mobile email. So apart from 3G compatibility, E-Ten must yet deliver phones with QWERTY keyboard for single-handed usage - to cover all market segments and to be able to compete also with Palm, Samsung, Nokia and BlackBerry.
