Where in time is MS Smartphone from Samsung? April 11, 2003 [MS Smartphone] | By anonymous 1. Although we have been personally touching and testing MS Smartphones from such vendors as: HTC, Mitac, Compal and Intel, we couldnīt however spot on any show any MS Smartphone from Samsung, like this one:
O brother, where art thou? After watching reports of people from latest Mobius (2003 Europe), we have noticed one MS Smartphone from Samsung on one of PowerPoint presentations...
(picture above presents, from the left to the right Smartphones from: Compal, Samsung, Mitac, Intel, HTC [SPV], HTC [Tanager aka SPVx]) ... but ... no MS Smartphone from Samsung was shown in action anywhere: neither in MDC 2003 nor in CeBIT 2003!!! Well, Samsung was listed in MDC sessions as one of MS Smartphone hardware producers, but thatīs it! Next year new wave of MS Smartphones will be coming: smartphones equipped with MS Smartphone system of next generation (.NET Compact Framework burnt into ROM and based on Windows CE 4.2 not on Windows CE 3.0 like MS Smartphone 2002). The question remains open: when, if at all, will Samsung bring MS Smartphone based phones to the market? Please note that Samsung was planning to make MS Smartphones both in CDMA and GSM versions, and it even FCC-certified one! Despite the fact that Samsung people, where asked during CeBIT 2003, if Samsung will release MS Smartphone based phones, were answering: "no", Microsoft still insists on Samsung being "coming soon" manufacturer of MS Smartphones. Well, while we keep dreaming about MS Smartphone from Samsung, Samsung in meantime is preparing big time its own Symbian Smartphone based on Series 60 software:
(to the left: Symbian/Series 60 phone from Samsung, to the right: Orange SPV - already available on the market MS Smartphone) Guesstimate of msmobiles.com: MS Smartphone made by Samsung will come much later, than Symbian phone from Samsung (after all we were playing with this Symbian phone as you can see on the picture above and it looks like it has very short time to market) and it will be not earlier than summer 2004... What Microsoft can do in such a situation when Samsung is delaying release of MS Smartphone hardware because of various Symbian and Nokia deals? (keep in mind: Samsung is buying at Nokia not only Series 60 software but also software components for non-smartphone cell phones) Well, Microsoft should do this, what it is doing best: good software - and Microsoft should speed up releasing deadlines of MS Smartphone of next generation and provide upgrading path for existing MS Smartphone 2002 users to get updated to the this latest version of OS. We know that MS Smartphone of next generation (this one based on Windows CE 4.2) has many brilliant sophisticated features, and only speeding up of its time to market can make up the problems with hardware vendors.
