Review : WPA2 Wi-Fi comes to Windows Mobile - at last! December 05, 2006 [Wireless (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ...)] | By Edward J. R. It takes some time, but Microsoft is getting things right! In this review we have tested WPA2 in a Windows Mobile phone with AKU3.3 and we provide also tips how to get WPA2 working if your device still has no AKU3 or newer... If your phone has AKU3 or newer (AKU3.3, etc) then at last you can connect to Wi-Fi access points protected with WPA2, either with AES encryption:
... or with TKIP encryption:
... and now at last you can connect to all Wi-Fi access points, no matter whether they use no protection, WEP, WPA or WPA2:
Until recently users of Windows Mobile phones and PDAs had to revert their Wi-Fi access points to WPA instead of using highest-security WPA2. This solution however not only decreases overall security but also sometimes is not a solution at all, for example if you are visiting corporations or friends, who use WPA2 and certainly will not switch back to less-secure solution! * * * * * Not everybody knows that if given Wi-Fi access point is protected with WEP then with simple and free program one can break it after less than one hour of analysis! Clearly WPA is more secure but still it is breakable. The only genuinely secure method nowadays is WPA2 (also known as IEEE 802.11i standard)! To check whether given Windows Mobile phone supports WPA2 out-of-the-box you must check whether it has AKU version 3 or newer! To do it just go to "Settings" and then open "About" item:
You can notice on image above, after build number, digits "3.3" - these digits denote exactly what version of AKU your phone has! If it is older version than 3, then there is no built-in support for WPA2! Please note: it is totally uncertain whether your phone will ever have ROM upgrade to AKU3 or newer so if you would like to have WPA2 support pre-installed, ensure that given phone has proper version of AKU in current version of ROM! In most cases promises of salespeople and distributors saying something like "new ROM with AKU3 coming soon" are not to be trusted. It is worth mentioning that some phones (example: Fujitsu-Siemens T830) have some proprietary software add-ons that enable WPA2! In such cases it is enough for you to load given program from the included CD-ROM and your Windows Mobile phone will have WPA2 support. What to do however if your Windows Mobile phone has old AKU and no support for WPA2 through utility included on the CD-ROM? The solution is Odyssey Access Client - learn more about it and download trial version here. Please note that you need version 4.0 or newer of this client: New Features in version 4.50:
