Rumor: Google phone - gPhone made by HTC and powered by Windows Mobile ? December 18, 2006 [General] | By Edward J. R. Admittedly Orange was the first mobile operator to launch Microsoft Smartphone (touch screen -less Windows Mobile platform; O2 was the first with Pocket PC phone), and now it looks like Orange could be the first to launch Google phone! While Yahoo has released Yahoo Go for Symbian and Windows Mobile - native applications for smartphone platforms - by now all that Google released in mobile space were Java midlets for BlackBerry and regular phones - but no native (non-Java) Google applications for smartphones! Google already has technology to render big websites through Google proxy servers on mobile devices - this technology is used in mobile access to Google mail for example. Obviously it is only a question of time when Google would like to move their advertising technologies to mobile space and it looks that this time is: year 2008 when first gPhone (Google Phone) will be launched at Orange - in UK! Orange is not present in USA and is a 3rd largest operator in Europe, where it mainly operates. The story about Google phone was broken at "The Observer" paper-based newspaper, a Sunday edition of British left-wing newspaper "The Guardian" (here: marked in yellow):
... and is also available in extended version online here. Since Google phone to be launched at Orange in year 2008 would be manufactured by HTC - a manufacturer specialized in design and manufacturing of Windows MObile phones, it may well be that Google phone will be powered by Windows Mobile ... or at least by Windows CE ...
