NetFront LocationFree Player for Pocket PC now available
December 28, 2006 [Pocket PC] | By Edward J. R.

We have been reporting about this LocatioFree player for Pocket PC already 6 months ago, but now, at last it is commercially available!

Sony offers LocationFree base station for remote TV watching and it is already available commercially for some time, however Sony decided to outsource production of the mobile player to Japanese Access company (the one that makes NetFront browser and that purchased Palm OS makers - PalmSource). Unlike Slingbox and Slingplayer (that can handle even lower bandwidth) however at least 300 kbps upload connection is needed for LocationFree to work properly...

NetFront LocationFree Player for Pocket PC is an application that supports TV or DVD programs on a Pocket PC device when connected to Sony Corporation's LocationFree base station via wireless LAN or router. NetFront LocationFree Player for Pocket PC allows you to enjoy TV programs both at home and while you are away from home via the Internet.

In addition to supporting images from external devices such as DVD recorders and video cameras, NetFront LocationFree Player for Pocket PC rev. 2.0.0 also features advanced remote functionality, which allows users to operate external devices through their device screen, including playback, stop, or fast-forward.

Features:
- You can watch TV program or HDD/DVD on a PocketPC via the base station
- Advanced remote functionality, allows you to operate external devices through a screen and playback, stop, or fast-forward
- Auto rate adjust, to get the best picture according to the communication conditions
- Supports Windows Mobile 5.0 / Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition ; VGA and QVGA

System Requirements
- CPU PXA2xx(XScale)/PXA2xx-compatible CPU
- OS Windows Mobile 5.0 software for Pocket PC, Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition software for Pocket PC
- Display VGA(640x480), QVGA(320 x 240)
- Memory for Data Storage
- Install module(cab):3.8 MB Execution module(exe,dll):3.9 MB
- Base station LF-B20(Sony Corporation)

Related links: Conclusion: Sony's LocationFree is a main competitor to SlingMedia's SlingBox and generally (yet) it is a solution, that is (still) inferior technologically. However Sony is a huge corporation and things may change. For example: Slingbox is a very good and reliable solution but still it doesn't transfer some additional information that is embedded in original TV signal - like subtitles, EPG and teletext - so in order to maintain leading position in remote TV watching market, SlingMedia, makers of SlingBox should extend their solution and transfer remotely also this additional information...
