Mobility at CES 2007 keynote of Bill Gates : Microsoft in self-denial about market position of Windows Mobile phones January 08, 2007 [General] | By Edward J. R. During the keynote Bill Gates was gesticulating emotionally:
.... and was inviting managers from various areas of Microsoft business to talk in more detail about these areas. One of these managers was Robbie Bach who is a manager responsible for Entertainment and Devices Division (Xbox, Zune and also Windows Mobile):
.... and who was talking shortly, as one of several topics, about Windows Mobile:
... where he mentioned (as you can see above) HTC and Samsung BlackJack smartphone. Robbie Bach also said that Windows Mobile phones are outselling BlackBerry devices what created false impression that Microsoft is number one in smartphone market. This false impression he further reinforced when he was summarizing his speech and mentioned that Windows Mobile has "leadership position". In reality however in global smartphone market Windows Mobile has rather small market share - below 20%, Symbian having over 70%. Later on Bill Gates invited a top manager from Ford corporation:
... who was talking about "Ford Sync" created by Microsoft exclusively for Ford. This guy mentioned, among others, that now thanks to this solution it will be possible to continue talking on the mobile phone when you arrived with your car to the destination and you no longer need Bluetooth connection between your mobile phone and a car - users will be able to continue the phone call without interrupting it. Interesting aspect of Ford Sync is upgradeability - so that people who purchase Ford cars don't have to worry that they will not be compatible with latest mobile phones. Unfortunately Windows Mobile was not mentioned in context of this Ford-Microsoft deal at all but as side effect of this cooperation better support for various Bluetooth profiles may be expected also in Windows Mobile... All in all Windows Mobile took about 2 minutes of the presentation that lasted approx. 90 minutes! Maybe for Microsoft it is enough that BlackBerry devices have been "outsold" by Windows Mobile phones, but reality is different and in year 2006 global market share of Windows Mobile phones not only has not increased but dropped with regard to the year 2005! Clearly Windows Vista and Xbox in combination with HDTV and online gaming are more important for Microsoft than Windows Mobile alone but through synergy effects we can expect also improvements in the Windows Mobile itself. Please note: Windows Mobile 6.0 (aka Crossbow) has not been launched and next opportunity where launch of this major version may happen is 3GSM World Congress 2007 that takes place next month already... * * * * * Below you can see video that shows part of the keynote where Robbie Bach talks about Windows Mobile (Flash enabled browser required; we apologize for low quality - video of higher quality will be uploaded later):
