ROM upgrade for HTC Universal with Windows Mobile 6 ( Crossbow ) leaked on the Internet January 15, 2007 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R. Time is ripe for Microsoft to release and announce officially Windows Mobile 6 at last! We have plenty of information about it but in fear of Microsoft lawyers we have pulled it down and we are not publishing it at all... 3GSM World Congress 2007 next month would be a good opportunity for Microsoft to lift NDA limitations and announce Windows Moble 6 to the public at last! Unfortunately we suspect that it will be Microsoft-only events like Tech*Ed or MEDC where Windows Mobile 6 alias Crossbow will be announced for the first time... because they coincide with the expected availability of first phones powered by this new version of Windows Mobile! To avoid problems with lawyers we will not publish the link (but any Internet user who knows how to use search engines can find it easily) to download ROM upgrade for HTC Universal that contains fully functional Windows Mobile 6 also known as "Windows Mobile Crossbow" (it's a code name), but it suffices to say that this ROM upgrade is available already and anybody who owns HTC Universal Pocket PC phone can upgrade to Windows Mobile 6 - albeit unofficially, what may cause loss of warranty and problems with compatibility. HTC Universal is a Pocket PC phone (the first ever Windows Mobile phone powered by Windows Mobile 5.0, the first ever Windows Mobile phone with 3G support and VGA display) and not an MS Smartphone (i.e. Windows Mobile Smartphone edition) so anyway upgrade to Windows Mobile 6 will not bring overly huge improvements... so we recommend not to apply this ROM upgrade! HTC Universal is branded, among others, as Orange SPV M5000, O2 XDA EXEC, T-Mobile MDA PRO, QTEK 9000, i-mate JASJAR and SFR v1640. Instead of postponing official announcement of Windows Mobile 6 (it has been unofficially already released to hardware manufacturers in RTM version at the end of last year) maybe Microsoft should concentrate now on ensuring that next version of Windows Mobile - code-name "Photon" - would support multi-touch - to be able to compete with Apple iPhone on equal terms? ( RTM = Ready To Manufacture )
