For developers: SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition released officially by Microsoft
January 17, 2007 [General] | By Edward J. R.

SQL Server Mobile could run only in Windows CE and Windows Mobile devices but new SQL Server Compact Edition can run additionally also in Windows XP and Windows Vista what makes it suitable also for Tablet PC and UMPC computers. In other words: now developers can create appealing database applications for all Microsoft platforms... at once, with the same tool.

Regarding naming: previously the name "SQL Everywhere" was used for this product as you can read here but probably due to similarity to database products with the word "Anywhere" in name, Microsoft decided to use name "Compact Edition" in the final product:

A Winning Combination of SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition, SQL Server 2005 and Visual Studio 2005 to Easily Build, Test, Deploy, and Manage Applications for Users who need to be productive anytime, anywhere and anyplace on any device. Full integration of SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition with SQL Server 2005 and Visual Studio 2005 provides a platform for developers to rapidly build applications that extend enterprise data management capabilities to mobile devices.

"SQL Server Compact 2005 Edition gave us just what we needed: a time-tested, compact, and full-featured relational database with proven stability and performance". Peter Flanagan, President, Transzap

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition is the next version of SQL Server Mobile adding the desktop platform. SQL Server Compact extends the SQL Server Mobile technology by offering a low maintenance, compact embedded database for single-user client applications for all Windows platforms including tablet PCs, pocket PCs, smart phones and desktops. Just as with SQL Server Mobile, SQL Server Compact is a free, easy-to-use, lightweight, and embeddable version of SQL Server 2005 for developing desktop and mobile applications.
