Rumor : new naming scheme in Windows Mobile 6.0 January 29, 2007 [General] | By Edward J. R. No more "Pocket PC", no more "Smartphone"! At this moment the names are Windows Mobile 5.0 for Smartphone, Pocket PC Phone Edition and Pocket PC. With the arival of Windows Mobile 6 the names will be changed to: Windows Mobile 5.0 for Smartphone -> Windows Mobile 6 Standard Windows Mobile 5.0 for Pocket PC -> Windows Mobile 6 Classic Windows Mobile 5.0 for Pocket PC Phone -> Windows Mobile 6 Professional By changing the names Microsoft wants to make that the transition from traditional handhelds to the current smart devices more clear. Microsoft also wants to make it more clear for customers what the difference between Smartphones, Pocket PC's and Pocket PC Phone really is. All Windows Mobile devices without a touchscreen will be called "Standard". These will probably all be Smartphones. By naming the Pocket PC version "Classic" Microsoft wants to ensure that customers know that this basic platform has come to an end and connected devices are the future.
