Malformed JPEG file can hang Windows Mobile 5.0 and other vulnerabilities February 01, 2007 [General] | By Edward J. R. Security companies are doing great work in detecting what are the security and performance issues of Windows Mobile devices. The purpose of their investigations is to get publicity obviously and thus boost their sales but the results are a bit disconcerting: even Windows Mobile 5.0 still has issues, that by now has not been fixed... but in any case it is better to be aware of these issues rather than to sweep them under the carpet. Vulnerability in Windows Mobile Pictures & Videos Could Allow Denial of Service Attacks Risk: Moderate Affected Software: Windows Mobile 2003 Windows Mobile 5.0 Description: This security advisory explains a flaw in the Pictures and Videos application that ships with Windows Mobile 2003/2003SE and Windows Mobile 5.0 (both Smartphone and PocketPC). This vulnerability can cause a denial of service (DoS) attack against a device. When Pictures and Videos application tries to read a malformed JPEG file, the device can hang for 10-15 minutes while attempting to process the file. However, no error occurs during this period and the user would have no indication as to why the device is not responding. The Pictures and Videos ships by default on devices using the Windows Mobile 2003/2003SE and Windows Mobile 5.0 operating systems To learn more about this and other vulnerabilities of Windows Mobile 5.0, click here.
