The best news for Windows Mobile in year 2007 : Google Maps for Windows Mobile released !!! February 02, 2007 [General] | By Edward J. R. The release of Windows Mobile 6 will be a very important event, but release of Google Maps for Windows Mobile is of MONUMENTAL importance!!! And in MS Smartphone version:
... you can use (with single hand!!!) your keys to use quickly Google Maps (example: volume up and down = zooming out and in) - take that, button-less Apple iPhone! Don't read this story till the end, don't wait, download Google Maps for Windows Mobile right now by going to this address ("gmm" = Google Maps Mobile): google.com/gmm Here is several screen shots that show some features of Google Maps for Windows Mobile - a native non-Java (= super fast) application:
As you can see above the application is not code-signed but signing would bring problems with some operators and development cycle (releasing new versions) would be slowed down so it is good in the ened! The application takes only 607 KB (less than one MB!):
... because it fetches all maps from the Internet from Google servers! If your installation:
... will be successful then you will see this message:
After installation the Google Maps icon is visible in menu:
You must agree with Terms and Conditions:
... and the version of the application is 1.0.0 - very first public version (but not beta!):
Most of the features of regular Google Maps are available through the menu:
... and users can view the map:
... or satellite view:
Conclusion: previously to run Google Maps in Windows Mobile one had to fiddle with various rather unstable Java virtual machines and anyway some Windows Mobile phones don't have any Java virtual machine at all... but now everything has changed! If there were any doubts whether Windows Mobile is in the mainstream of mobile phone industry, these doubts are no more - release of Google Maps for Windows Mobile proves it.
