3GSM 2007 review of Toshiba G900 Windows Mobile phone
February 12, 2007 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R.

Imagine a phone that is of size similar to HTC Hermes but that has display resolution 2.5 times bigger than Apple iPhone and 1.25 times bigger than HTC Athena and 5 times bigger than HTC Hermes. Imagine a phone that has 3G (including HSDPA and video calling), Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, slide-out keyboard and fingerprint sensor - all in one. This new phone is the Toshiba G900 - the new most powerful Windows Mobile phone in the world. Here we present first reports and impressions about this phone from 3GSM as well as release date of this phone!

At Microsoft press briefing (our full first-hand report from this event is coming soon - including full audio and video recording) Pieter Knook - the boss of Windows Mobile division - mentioned this Toshiba G900 as one of new products of some new Windows Mobile phone manufacturers:

Furthermore Ted Matsumoto from Japanese mobile operator SoftBank (previously known as Vodafone Japan) also mentioned this phone:

... as example of excellent business phone powered by Windows Mobile that SoftBank will be offering in Japan (the other Windows Mobile phone offered by SoftBank is by HTC from Taiwan) in June 2007. Regarding release date for USA/Europe we have learned from Toshiba staff that it will be "early summer" without any commitment to any month. Obviously the fact, that Toshiba and SoftBank both are Japanese and Japanese people like to buy Japanese products, rather than foreign one, will help in sales of Toshiba G900 in Japan!

We have been testing Toshiba G900 and we like it! Below our impressions.

First impression is that this phone is "just another Windows Mobile phone with touch screen with slide-out QWERTY keyboard":

... but a closer look at the display gives an "unreal experience" where everything seems to be elongated (no wonder: 800x480 resolution is amazing):

Obviously when the keyboard is opened the display orientation automatically is being switched from vertical (portrait) to horizontal (landscape):

Certainly the good news is that this phone has also industry-standard mini-USB connector (so that you can use any mini-USB cable in case the original one is lost):

The SD card slot is in "mini-SD" standard what allows for connection of memory cards (up to 4GB probably; no info about SDHC compatibility yet!) and SDIO accessories.

It is worth noticing that connectors are covered so the phone can be used also in more rugged conditions!

On the other side of the phone one can find 2 megapixel camera and the phone generally is very curvy and rounded:

The stylus is telescopic what is strange in a device of this size, but apparently Japanese think that telescopic stylus is a trendy, "cool", thing:

Here is how the power switch button looks like:

Conclusion: incredibly high resolution and fingerprint sensor, combined with Windows Mobile 6, will make out of Toshiba G900 a very strong competitor not just for existing Windows Mobile manufacturers and their top models, but also for Apple iPhone and Symbian. Clearly Toshiba G900 is directed at business market, and may be not the cheapest one (it is yet to be seen however) but it delivers on the promise - "ideal business partner"!
