3GSM 2007: Microsoft press briefing
February 13, 2007 [General] | By Edward J. R.

Unfortunately uploading and processing of uncensored unique video recording of this press event will take yet a couple days (watch this space for new news item with this video recording) but for now we present textual depiction, enhanced by pictures and full un-edited audio recording!

The press briefing was managed by Pieter Knook, Senior Vice-President of Microsoft and generally considered to be a boss of Windows Mobile (and Embedded) division. Main motive of the event was unveiling of Windows Mobile 6:

... and new Windows Mobile 6 operating system was introduced by Pieter Knook himself:

... but features of Windows Mobile 6 were also described further by John O'Rourke from Microsoft:

... whose presentation was outlining some new features of Windows Mobile 6 but at the same time was contrasting - a jaw-dropping moment - lack of such features in competitive platforms - BlackBerry and Symbian S60 (here: HTML support in email client):

Then Yves Maitre (Vice President, Devices) from Orange (a mid-size European mobile operator):

... was talking in cozy terms about long-year, "historical", cooperation with Microsoft and HTC, particularly underlining beauty of the new HTC s710 smartphone that will be on sale soon at Orange.

Then Pieter Knook introduced Ted Matsumoto ( from Japanese small-size mobile operator SoftBank (Vice President, Technology Strategy Officer [military rank in corporation?]) owned by a big corporation SoftBank that purchased Vodafone Japan and renamed it to their own name):

... who was talking about cooperation with Microsoft, HTC and Toshiba.

Then Pieter Knook introduced Leslie Grandy (Vice President, Product and Services Development) from T-Mobile USA:

... who praised T-Mobile Dash, ease of use of Windows Mobile and ensured that Windows Mobile 6 upgrade for T-Mobile Dash will be available soon and for free.

Then Pieter Knook was talking about new mobile operators and new devices and about various manufacturers. Then Pieter Knook mentioned that Windows Mobile 6 offers voice over IP (VoIP) and introduced Jerry Thomson (Chief of Applications and Development) from British Telecom (BT):

... who was talking about BT's offering for small business and UK-wide roll-out of Wi-Fi (both Wi-Fi hotspots and "Wi-Fi cities") what is compatible with Windows Mobile 6 VoIP support, that BT will be utilizing by selling Windows Mobile handsets.

After BT section the announcements section of the press meeting was over and fast answers and questions part started, which was moderated by this employee of Microsoft:

... and Pieter Knook invited other 2 Microsoft managers to take a seat with him - Brian Arbogast (manager of Live services for mobile) and Chuck Nolton (manager of DRM technology group):

Now the session of questions and answers started. Some of these questions were asked over Internet by listeners/viewers and some were asked from the journalists present in the room.

This journalist asked about ROM upgrade in T-Mobile Dash:

This female journalist had no idea how to behave during a press briefing and in a boorish, respectless way was LOUDLY speaking on the phone although the press briefing was not over yet:

This journalist asked about VoIP in Windows Mobile 6 (whether it will be available also at other operators than BT):

This journalist asked whether there is handover mechanism between VoIP (Wi-Fi) and cellular voice connection:

This journalist (Hal Goldstein from Pocket PC Magazine, the one in the middle on photo below) asked whether companies that are not operators will be able to build solutions based on built-in VoIP technology of Windows Mobile 6:

Then another journalist (the first from the left on photo above) asked about maintaining differences between Pocket PC and smartphone in Windows Mobile 6.

This journalist asked about entertainment application of Windows Mobile in future:

This journalist asked about availability of voice recognition in Windows Mobile 6:

This journalist asked about improvements in Windows Mobile 6 in area of battery life:

Then, when no other journalist present in the room wanted to ask questions, the press briefing ended.

Conclusion: Windows Mobile 6 is solid and brings new features both for end users (consumers) and enterprises (professionals). This year Micrsosoft press briefing at 3GSM 2007 was more significant than last year because it was used by Microsoft to unveil wholly new version of Microsoft's operating system. The fact of the matter is that Apple will not license iPhone OS to anybody and Windows Mobile has very strong position in USA and in enterprise market generally - so clearly there is still bright future for the Windows Mobile because many manufacturers purposefully are targeting enterprise market - that is perceived as high margin business. One can only hope that this whole talk about Windows Mobile being perfect for business will not scare away consumers, for whom private use, also for entertainment and gaming purposes is vital...
