3GSM 2007: Suzan DelBene from Microsoft talks about Windows Mobile in a session about smartphone operating systems
February 14, 2007 [General] | By Edward J. R.

In this session the speakers were Nigel Clifford (CEO, Symbian), Jim Balsillie (co-CEO of RIM [BlackBerry]) and Suzan DelBene (Corporate Vice President, Mobile and Embedded Devices, Microsoft):

The discussion was about Symbian, Windows Mobile, BlackBerry and generally about role and future of smartphone operating systems. Here we present full uncensored audio recording (high-quality and in stereo - including questions and answers part!) and short overview of presentation of Suzan DelBene from Microsoft:

Suzan DelBene was talking generally about mobile market but she also underlined new features in Windows Mobile 6.

First slide was about importance of big hardware choice:

Next slide underlined abilities of Windows Mobile:

... and was very cleverly designed, because although the whole slide was static, the screen shot in the display was changing quickly, showing among others new Windows Mobile 6 devices (surreptitious advertising? devices included: Toshiba, Samsung, i-mate):

Also Office Mobile, including Excel Mobile - now available also in touch-screen-less Windows Mobile phones (and with editing capability!) was presented as one of rotating screen shots:

Next slide was about mobile phone industry opportunities:

Next slide was about importance of open platforms (open = able to run 3rd party applications):

Generally Suzan DelBene used well the opportunity to present newly released Windows Mobile 6. When a computer science professor from Honolulu asked about which mobile operating system should be used in education of students, Suzan DelBene cleverly underlined that Windows Mobile is not just mobile phones but Microsoft offers also Windows CE that is used for many industrial applications, including creation of robots. The fact that all Visual Studio developers, who develop applications for desktop version of Windows (i.e. Windows Vista, Windows XP) can also develop mobile applications because the same tool is used - also was pointed out by Suzan.

The most passionate speaker was the co-CEO of RIM, who was among others talking about BlackBerry Connect - i.e. ability to use BlackBerry push e-mail service also in devices powered by Windows Mobile!

Apart from the presentation of Suzan DelBene also CEOs of Symbian and RIM BlackBerry were presenting their own stuff and then all 3 of them were answering questions from the audience. To listen to the full, un-edited uncesored recording of this session click HERE.

Please note: video recording of the Microsoft related part of this event we will publish later - after 3GSM.
