Free Windows Mobile 6 upgrades for existing vendors - a lie February 27, 2007 [General] | By Edward J. R. Some people don't know what they are writing about and then others are just repeating such lies... Some people claim that Micrsosoft is offering for free Windows Mobile 6 to vendors, who now are shipping Windows 5.0 phones and thus it is only up to vendors to release Windows Mobile 6 to end users. We would like to debunk this claim as a complete lie. We have reliable information that Microsoft is charging everybody for license of Windows Mobile 6 - also existing vendors. Some of these vendors purchased Windows Mobile 5.0 with option for Windows Mobile 6 but it was in no way free. What does it mean for end users? It means 2 things: license for Windows Mobile 6 is not free for vendors so if a vendor decides to buy it from Microsoft, then it normally will be offered for a fee. Secondly upgrade to Windows Mobile 6 requires testing on part of mobile operators and not just vendors and it means additional money needs to be spent before such Windows Mobile 6 upgrade for Windows Mobile 5.0 device would become available. Obviously vendors or mobile operators could sponsor such upgrades and make them free, but one is for sure: they will have to pay to Microsoft themselves.
